The Changes of the Map of French Universities Since the 1960s: Findings and Issues

A study of the changes in the universities map during the past 5 decades leads one to first ask which geographical level to retain. Who produces and who uses such documents? When the map of French universities in the beginning of the 3rd millennium is sketched, we notice the urban hierarchy structuring the academic reality on one hand, and the regional level revealing remarkable trajectories within the 25 past years on the other hand. All these characteristics are not only consequences of the last national plan, “Université 2000” (1990–1995). Regions such as Brittany and Ile-de-France show that political decisions were taken in the beginning of the 1960's. This finally leads us to question the relations between cartographic productions and town and country planning.
