In order to analyse the situation in today’s Algeria the contribution of historians is most welcome. If a democratic culture is still to be found, between the challenge of politics and the problems of society, there is no doubt that the violent and complex history of the independence war matters. But in order to work it out Algerians also need to take into account their long term history, including the legacy of the Koran and of the Ottoman period.
